Art can be pretty, a photograph can have good color and so on. But do I want to look again. Do I think there might be more there. I have been looking at two artists over the last year and I keep going back to there work. First is Josef koudelka (Photographer with magnum) and second is Lee Bontecou (the reclusive sculptor). They both raise a question that is hard for me to relate to. Every time I interface with their work I am constantly asked, what is the Artist not saying. In my work I want there to be sense of asking a question rather then proving something. To pawn off photography as a means of verification is to deny the artist the conversation and that is the very thing we are after.

If you are not familiar with his work, google him its worth the time. (its not for the faint but look here) . I know its not the usual fashion type stuff but he does raise important questions about why we choose to capture a moment in time and make a photograph. In addition to Nachtwey I have been looking a lot at early photographic work mostly Atget and Le Grey. All three, to me, share a common and slightly nebulous idea of "verification." Its as if something in the work wants to verify the existence of both its subject and it creator. The Photographer says, "Look, this subject was here." But the subtext becomes a conversation about between the subject and the creator. Where by the photographer says, "We were here." and now, in the conversation, the photographer becomes both witness and participant.

We have some cycles we are completing

New projects

He really challenges a lot of things about the way i make photographs. His work is so open and intimate. Where i approach a scene and change the situation for my vision Frank moves like a ghost down back alleys and dusty bars with glowing jukeboxes, he sees whats really there and reacts.In the most honest way he really is both witness and participant.

Today Kevin, Susan and I went to LACMA, to see the Vanity Fair portraits.

Here's my take on it. Basically the portraits from vanity fair went to having

great iconic figures to having hollywood celebrities pose as iconic figures with way to

much of an air of importance. They went from being great portraits of Albert Einstein,

Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keefe, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstiein, etc....all great people in history to tom cruise's family overly processed digital portrait. Anyhow, these people were great, and did great things for us, not a lot of the modern images were an aspiring tribute to our modern day. However there are and were great images by Mario Testino, Michael Thompson, and Herb Ritts. It clarified for me the difference between a good image, worthy content, and real art. Real art...brings me to the rest of the day there. On the totem pole of art, after seeing the vanity fair images, photography ranked slightly lower in the day. I love photography, for many reasons, it's inspired me, and saved my life at times of great change and became my rock when I needed it. It really did. However, lately I'm feeling it's not enough. Not enough to communicate what I feel and see to communicate. I see it as one of the pieces to the pie, yet not all. There was an exhibit there today that struck me more than anything. It was a contemporary project on Masculinity and Sports. It was how it was communicated that struck me more than the content. There was six artist with mixed media, of video, photographic portraits, and other visual installations, exploring the archetype of male athletics. It moved me more than anything, and made me laugh.

What I got from it was a lot of inspiration, and clarification. About what I see art is- for me, what has guts, what's art in our everyday life that we take for granted. Like Kevin said today, in the coming future will Ikea furniture be in an exhibit? What will having meaning to us most in the future, looking back at today? What represents us now ?

Yes i know, the rumors are true i am going to florida for the holidays to see my future in laws. Its insanity. But!... I am going with a mission, or several to be exact. I will be taking photos along the way to document the coolest weirdest and scariest sights florida has to offer for the holidays. Wish me luck and feel free to contribute to the mischief.

Good things come in small packages, like dynamite

For a while i had a practice of carrying a small 35mm P&S camera with me almost every where. It became a great way for me to start to think more about what i was doing and why i find certain things more interesting then others. I really had to learn to find good light and use it. I had one of the above cameras until yesterday when it stopped working. So heres a salute to the small cameras, the toy cameras, the polaroids, and all the cameras that dare us to see big through small a viewfinder.

A vision great enough to carry one through the struggle of transformation

A good friend of mine said that to me about a year ago, " Kevin!, what you need is a vision great enough to carry you through the pain of transformation." It never really stuck until my recent lull in artistic inspiration. I was thinking last night about what to do and that phrase came back to me in a sort crazed "ahah!" moment. I think i practically plowed Susan (my fiance) down with a wall of excitement. Im not sure how much farther down the rabbit hole that whole thing goes but...I'm realizing that artistic Vision and my point of view change very slowly as experiences are layered on top of each other. The world on the other hand changes at a much faster pace and rather then fight for the integrity of "my way" I might need to let my Vision ebb and flow in the natural cycles of life.
